Septoplasty
One of the most common causes of breathing difficulties is a deviated septum. The septum is the small portion of cartilage and bone inside the nose that separates the two chambers of the nostrils. When this internal wall leans to one side, is crooked, or has been affected by injury, it can compromise the natural, healthy flow of air through the nose. Dr. Sadrian performs septoplasty in San Diego to correct this structural flaw. When performed by an established, board-certified plastic surgeon such as Dr. Sadrian, septoplasty can restore your comfort, peace of mind, and overall quality of life.
A deviated septum can cause a variety of concerns for patients, including sinus blockage, headaches, infections, breathing problems, sleep troubles, and even nosebleeds. Septoplasty is performed to correct the issue and restore unobstructed airflow through the nostrils. While sleeping aids, decongestants, and other medications can be effective in the short-term, only septoplasty will address the root cause of symptoms and provide a dramatic and long-lasting solution. Septoplasty can be easily combined with rhinoplasty, which will correct cosmetic concerns at the same time. It can also be performed in conjunction with other surgeries to correct breathing, such as nasal valve surgery.

Not every patient with a deviated septum will require surgery to correct it. However, clients who are experiencing the following may want to undergo the surgery to improve their quality of life:
In general, patients should be non-smokers who are mentally and physically healthy and have realistic expectations for their results. Dr. Sadrian will meet with you for an initial consultation to discuss your options and determine if septoplasty is a good fit for you.
Septoplasty is performed under general or local anesthesia and usually takes about 2 hours. The surgery is typically fully covered by insurance carriers. Similar to rhinoplasty, the surgeon has a choice of either open or closed surgery. Open surgery leaves behind a tiny scar at the base of the nose across the columella, while closed surgery allows for incisions that are completely hidden within the nasal cavities. Once the incision has been created, the doctor will reshape the bone and cartilage, removing any excess that is causing an obstruction. Once the air pathways are sufficiently unblocked, the mucus membrane is sutured in place, and the nose is fortified with packing or splints.
Dr. Sadrian's San Diego septoplasty patients can usually return home the same day of their surgery. Sutures will dissolve, and any packing will be removed within the first day after the procedure. Splints will remain for up to a few weeks, however. Minor swelling and nasal drainage may occur, but these side effects can be remedied by sleeping with the head elevated for 1-2 weeks. You should avoid intense physical activities for the first 10-14 days. As your healing progresses, you will find that it is easier to breathe and that many of the old symptoms you used to struggle with have been alleviated.
