You will awaken from surgery with your nose area bandaged and will need another person to take you home to rest. Ensure you have filled your prescriptions prior to your day of surgery – you will want to just rest on the first day.

What is Recovery from
Rhinoplasty Like?

Recovery from nose reshaping surgery will require some patience. Initially, you will need to rest – any surgery shocks the system, and rest allows your body to expend its energy on healing. A mild to moderate amount of pain is normal, but you be prescribed pain medication to help keep you comfortable during the early stages of recovery. It is normal to have some bruising and swelling. If only the nose tip has been altered, the bruising should be minimal if at all.

What To Expect After a Nose Job

The most annoying aspect of recovery, according to our patients, is the sensation of a stuffy nose, which will diminish over the following days. Your nose, due to the swelling, will appear larger than you expected – don’t worry! That is just the body working to heal. Once the stuffy sensation is gone, you will be far more comfortable. Sleep with your head elevated and use ice compresses to help limit swelling. You must not plan any lifting, straining, or vigorous physical activity for at least three weeks after surgery in our La Jolla practice.

Types of Rhinoplasty Procedures: Open and Closed

There are two approaches in surgery:

Open Rhinoplasty: In this approach, a tiny incision is made in the columella, the tiny strip of tissue and cartilage between the nostrils. The incision, once healed, is virtually invisible. This approach allows for greater access to the nose structure, which is necessary in cases requiring cartilage grafts or other more complex changes to the nose structure.

Closed Rhinoplasty: In closed rhinoplasty, the incisions are made from within the nose. This approach is often used in cases of minor nose reshaping, as it allows for less access to the entire nose structure but has the advantage of leading to less swelling and bruising and a shorter recovery time.

Revision Rhinoplasty

In some cases, a person has had a rhinoplasty in the past that has problems. These issues could include:

  • Asymmetrical
  • Oddly-shaped
  • Nose too small
  • Nose too large
  • Breathing issues
  • Collapsed structure

If your primary rhinoplasty was performed incorrectly, there may be a lack of support with too much tip cartilage removed. The nostrils can then collapse, leaving a nose looking odd and unattractive. Another common issue requiring revision surgery is now the nose looks beak-like, as too much cartilage has been left just above the nose tip, creating a curve. In other cases, too much tissue and cartilage were removed in correcting a bridge hump, creating a scooped-out appearance, which can be corrected with revision rhinoplasty surgery. If the prior surgeon failed to create enough support for the altered nose, the entire central structure can collapse, leading to a deformity along with problems breathing.

Your Nose:Balance and Harmony

To create the most effective facial enhancement, nose surgery must be performed correctly. You may have a vision for a “perfect nose”, but will that nose shape suit your facial structure? We must consider harmony with the entire facial anatomy. We focus on artistry in plastic surgery – you want the procedure to achieve what you want, the first time. Dr. Sadrian is one of the most acclaimed San Diego facial plastic surgeons and can be trusted to achieve results that bring you joy.

Recuperation and healing after nose surgery

After your rhinoplasty La Jolla clients will be able to return home to rest and heal. You will have an external cast or splint to keep your newly-reshaped nose safe and stable. Your nostrils may be packed to provide more stability, with packing typically removed within two to four days. The sutures are removed after four to six days, and sutures within the nose structure simply dissolve. In the early stages of healing, you can expect some discomfort, easily managed with prescription pain medication. This discomfort is usually in the form of a stuffy nose sensation, rather than intense pain.

Your results:
How long will it take?

Most of the swelling associated with surgery diminishes over about two to four weeks, but it is not unusual for some swelling to persist longer. The initial results of your nose reshaping are seen at about three months, but for full healing, expect a year or more – although your new nose will look great to others, you may still have some residual swelling as your nose tissue recovers.

The decision to undergo a cosmetic procedure is extremely personal. If you are considering an enhancement, you want to be confident that your results will appear fresh and natural – and like you. Dr. Sadrian is among the finest plastic surgeons practicing in the San Diego area and has achieved acclaim for consistently achieving natural-looking results. Schedule an appointment to learn more.
